USS Taylor visits Savannah

Dec 03, 2010

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - USS Taylor, a guided missle Navy frigate, arrived in Savannah Thursday morning. The ship is named after a navy pilot who gave his life protecting a downed airman over north Vietnam in 1965.

The 453-foot ship just completed a six-month cross to the Arctic Sea port in Murmansk, Russia, to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II.

The ship will pass the Old Fort Jackson National Historic Landmark for a cannon salute at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday. The ship will be docked within the Georgia Ports Authority security perimeter and won't be open for public tours.

The USS Taylor is not open to the public, but sailors on board will take part in the Pearl Harbor remembrance ceremony Sunday at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum.
